urban sprawl + the auto

I think it’s worth mentioning these two together. The auto made urban sprawl possible. It also demands our wars, and global conflicts. And ironically, it’s also our biggest killer, far outweighing any terror, disease, etc.

dating more, marrying later, searching for love

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:49 am

There is a really in-depth 10 page piece over at NYT about all things Love in the time of on-line dating, a la lava life, friendster, tribe.net, myspace.com, craigs list, match.com, and the sheer exploision of people searching for the right mate, or enjoying the game for longer before they decide to settle down. Worth a look.

How to be happy?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:42 am

Perhaps this is the same as the God question. Here’s research it is one answer. Cocaine is the answer for other people. Then there are studies which say that love is like Cocaine. Weird ramblings I know, but it’s THANKSGIVING, after all. Just don’t ask the vatican.

cannibalism - can it explain our propensity for war?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:39 am

Cannibalism is in the news again. It seems we have a biological propensity which was even routine. Here’s a BBC piece which discusses it in some more detail.

ah yes, the smell of fresh democracy

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:27 am

I guess during an installation of Democracy, sometimes you need to ban TV stations. Some who are actually involved are starting to ask serious questions about forcing “democracy” down people’s throats. Has this ever been successful? Is there one historical precedent? Can’t we just admit what’s really going on here? One part cultural imperialism, and one part keep the terrorism from rising to a boil. Those goals I understand. Maybe people can’t digest the truth.

civilization inside the earth + vampires too!

I think this site Pravda is going to become a regular read of mine. Check out this piece on civilizations and planets inside the earth and another on real vampires. I especially enjoy the grammatical and/or spelling errors.

Strange but true, apparently there is an affliction where a few very lucky women are plagued by 200 orgasms/day. Now what would we do without the internet to bring such news to us?

It seems a new cybercrime bill is in the works which would streamlines European law enforcement access to personal information about Americans in an effort to stem everything from copyright infringement to hate speech. And have you heard about the new skin implantable RFID tags.

vegetarian, vegan, raw fooder, fruitarian, breatharian?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:39 am

Vegetarians have all heard the stories, but maybe it’s new or interesting, so I thought I’d post here. Vegetarians are those who avoid meat, poultry, and fish, but not milk, cheese, or dairy products.

I never knew Crowley was on the cover of the Sgt. Pepper’s album. And how about Carl Jung and Aldous Huxley. Those Beetles were cooler than I thought. Sgt. Pepper’s Album Cover Legend.

gawker still makes me laugh

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:06 am

I read Gawker because it makes me laugh out loud. Take this rant on Gawker personals.

Is that former Alice in Chains lead singer Layne Staley in the photo for the Gawker personals? If so, I think that’s kind of tacky considering the man
died last April.

dead wife coffee table

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:41 am

I’m sorry in advance for sinking so low, but this site was so strange, so bizarre, so seemingly impossible, that I had to post it. The man couldn’t stand the thought of his dead wife being interred, so he had her encased in a special glass COFFEE TABLE! This I found through the damn Link FU contest.

detroit - fabulous ruins?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:39 am

I don’t know why I find this Fabulous Ruins of Detroit site so compelling. Perhaps it’s because I lived in Buffalo for 9 years. Perhaps it’s because there’s this romantic feeling of these once great, but dying great-lake steel cities. The factories, the empty streets, the open great big open roads. I especially love this Fischer Body Plant ruins shot, this cemetary and this road shot

V Gallo in the house - it ain’t pretty

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:32 am

A recent discussion on Culture Trigger pointed me to this link about the man, and got me thinking about Buffalo 66 again. He’s a Buffalo native, I’m told. Apparently he has a big mouth too, and isn’t afraid to use it…

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:50 am

Father of cut-up, painter, poet, performance artist, radical thinker Brion Gysin didn’t just think out of the box, he was out of the box. The box is still trying to encompass his musings, and creations.

There’s a new book out about him which I found at St Marks Books Tuning in to the Multimedia Age published by Thames + Hudson.

Here’s a real taste of how fast technology changes. Ever travel and want to call someone, or want people to be able to call you? You have to share an international number, possibly with people who’ve never dialed internationally, or use a calling card with about 25 digits. Or you can get a GSM phone and pay an arm and a leg for the privilege.

This article is many things, but one thing is for certain, it’s not afraid of controversy. Irreconcilable Differences asks is Israel a bigger threat to world peace than North Korea, did France provide the missiles to blow up Wolfowitz’s hotel, and much more. Wacky theories, and wacky conclusions. This guy will keep you thinking, whether I agree with him or not.
